The Indian Premier League, IPL 2023 season concluded with an exhilarating match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans, culminating in CSK lifting the coveted trophy. However, according to the food delivery platform Swiggy, it was not the cricket teams, but rather the beloved dish of biryani that emerged victorious.
Swiggy took to Twitter to share an interesting statistic, revealing that biryani had clinched the title of the most-ordered food item during the IPL season. A staggering number of over 12 million orders for biryani were recorded, indicating its immense popularity among cricket enthusiasts.

Swiggy further emphasized the frenzy around this delectable dish by stating that it was ordered at a rate of 212 biryanis per minute (BPM).
This gastronomic trend was not limited to the current IPL season alone. Swiggy reported a remarkable 30% surge in biryani orders during the 2020 edition of the tournament. In addition to biryani, butter naan and masala dosa ranked as the top three preferred dishes by IPL viewers, showcasing their culinary preferences while enjoying the cricketing extravaganza.
The dominance of biryani as a fan-favorite continued in 2022, marking its seventh consecutive year as the most-ordered dish. Swiggy disclosed that an astonishing 2.28 orders of biryani were placed every second during this period, further solidifying its unrivaled popularity among Indian food enthusiasts.
According to a report by news agency PTI, on New Year’s Eve in 2023, Swiggy, the popular food delivery platform, successfully fulfilled nearly 3.50 lakh orders for biryani while also handling over 2.5 lakh orders for pizzas.
In a Twitter poll conducted by Swiggy, it was revealed that Hyderabadi Biryani dominated the preferences with 76.2 percent of the orders, followed by Lucknowi Biryani at 14 percent and Kolkata Biryani at 9.8 percent.
Notably, Bawarchi, a renowned biryani-selling restaurant in Hyderabad, played a significant role in meeting the overwhelming demand for biryani. On the previous New Year’s Eve in 2021, Bawarchi managed to deliver two biryanis every minute. To cater to the high demand on December 31, 2022, the restaurant prepared a staggering 15 tonnes of this delectable delicacy.
Biryani’s popularity extended beyond the New Year’s Eve celebrations, as it continued to reign as the most-ordered dish in 2022 for the seventh consecutive year. Swiggy reported an astonishing rate of 2.28 biryani orders placed every second, indicating the unwavering fondness for this flavorful and aromatic dish among food enthusiasts.
