Manoj Modi, a low-profile figure in India’s business circle, is a key player in Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance empire. Known as Mukesh Ambani’s right-hand man, Modi prefers to remain out of the limelight and little is known about his personal life.
He played a significant role in sealing the $5.7 billion deal between Reliance Jio and Facebook. Since then, he has been instrumental in securing deals worth $13 billion with various private-equity funds as Ambani looks to expand his digital technologies domain.
Modi is a director at Reliance Retail Ltd. and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. He is renowned as a hard bargainer with excellent deal-making skills. His approach to negotiations is indirect, especially when dealing with startups.
He is also an old hand at Reliance Industries, having joined the company in the 1980s when Dhirubhai Ambani was building the oil-and-petrochemicals giant. Modi studied with Mukesh Ambani at the University Department of Chemical Technology in Mumbai.
Despite his preference for a low profile, Modi is highly regarded in India’s business circles. He is widely recognized as a key player in the success of Reliance Industries, and his good working relationships with Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita and children Isha and Akash have been instrumental in driving the company’s telecom and retail businesses forward.
